Ontario survey: 91.1% of online gamblers reported using regulated sites

A closer look at the May Ipsos findings: the survey measures reported site use, rather than the share of every gambling dollar.

An Ipsos study released by iGaming Ontario on 21 May 2026 found that 91.1% of respondents who gambled online reported using regulated sites, compared with 83.7% a year earlier. We revisit the finding to explain what that percentage measures.

Reported participation is not revenue share

The result concerns respondents’ reported use of websites. It should not be presented as proof that regulated operators received 91.1% of all stakes or revenue. Those are different questions and would require transaction-based market data. Nor does use of a regulated site necessarily mean a respondent used only regulated sites.

Keep the geographical scope clear

This is an Ontario study, not a survey of every Canadian province. A national headline should not quietly turn a provincial finding into a countrywide claim. For readers comparing market statistics, the useful checks are who commissioned the research, what population was surveyed and whether a percentage describes people, accounts, wagers or revenue.
